Meet the Editors

Jason J. Nichols, OD, MPH, PhD, FAAO
Editor of Contact Lenses Today and Contact Lens Spectrum.

Dr. Jason J. Nichols is the Kevin McDaid Vision Source Professor at the University of Houston. He teaches coursework on the tear film, dry eye, corneal physiology and contact lenses and he has trained numerous graduate students (MS and PhD) and clinical fellows, including three Ezell Awardees. Dr. Nichols has received research funding from the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health to study dry eye diseases including meibomian gland disease, dry eye and contact lens-related dry eye. He has also received funding from the American Optometric Foundation, in addition to a variety of industrial partners.

Dr. Nichols has authored over 75 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 150 abstracts, and has given over 150 lectures worldwide on contact lenses and ocular surface conditions such as dry eye and meibomian gland disease. He is currently Editor of Contact Lens Spectrum and Contact Lenses Today, and serves on the editorial board for Eye and Contact Lens. Nichols is a dual diplomate in both the American Academy of Optometry's sections of Public Health and Environmental Optometry and Cornea, Contact Lenses, and Refractive Technology. He is also Chair of the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society's Medical and Scientific Advisory Board. His awards include three Ezell Fellowships and the Borish Award from the American Academy of Optometry.

S. Barry Eiden, OD, FAAO
Contributing Editor Contact Lenses Today

Dr. Eiden is president and medical director of North Suburban Vision Consultants, Ltd., a private group practice specializing in primary eye care, complex contact lens management, treatment of eye diseases, and refractive surgery. He is president and medical director of the National Keratoconus Institute, an organization providing patient care and practitioner education in the field of keratoconus and corneal ectasia. Dr. Eiden is also co-founder and president of EyeVis Eye and Vision Research Institute, which is dedicated to clinical research and development of technologies in the eyecare field.

Dr. Eiden is an assistant clinical professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center in the Department of Ophthalmology, Cornea and Contact Lens Service and an adjunct faculty member of the Indiana, Illinois, Salus, and UMSL Colleges of Optometry. Dr. Eiden is Past Chair of the American Optometric Association’s Contact Lens and Cornea Section. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Eiden is a research consultant for numerous contact lens, technology and pharmaceutical companies and lectures extensively both nationally and internationally

David Kading, OD, FAAO
Contributing Editor Contact Lenses Today

David Kading owns a three doctor, two location practice in Seattle, Washington. Specialty Eyecare Group encompasses primary care with subspecialties including pediatrics and binocular vision, glaucoma and retinal disease, anterior segment, dry eye and contact lenses. Dr. Kading specializes in complicated contact lens fitting, keratoconus, ocular surface disease, and the anterior segment. His referral based dry eye and contact lens clinics are well known for utilizing the latest technology for complex or rudimentary dry eye or contact lens fits. He welcomes students from five different U.S. based schools into the practice and co-owns Optometric Insights with Dr. Mile Brujic. Optometric Insights educates clinicians in novel and unique ways to treat patients, as well as providing career coaching for emerging optometrists as they enter into practice.

Dr. Kading has lectured internationally on topics including practice management, career development, anterior segment, ocular surface disease and contact lenses. He was recognized in 2013 by the state of Washington as the Young Optometrist of the Year.

Katherine M. Mastrota, MS, OD, FAAO
Contributing Editor Contact Lenses Today

Dr. Mastrota is Center Director of Omni Eye Surgery New York, an optometric referral center. She is a Contributing Editor to Contact Lens Spectrum and the online newsletter, Optometric Physician, as well as Contact Lenses Today. She sits on the Editorial Board of Advanced Ocular Care, Refractive EyeCare and Optometry Times and has authored numerous articles for these as well as other professional publications. She is on the Scientific Board of Directors as well as an advisor to a number of ophthalmic pharmaceutical companies.

With a special interest in ocular surface disease and dry eye, Dr. Mastrota was named Secretary to the Ocular Surface Society of Optometry (OSSO) and is on the Development Committee of the American Academy of Optometry's Anterior Segment Special Interest Group. She has lectured nationally on ocular surface disease and other topics.
